Privacy policy
Last updated: November 5, 2026.
Neko is a browser extension that shows your Canvas classes in a simpler dashboard. This policy explains what it handles and where that information goes. The short version: everything stays in your browser.
What the extension handles
- From Canvas: your courses, assignments, due dates, submission status, grades and scores, announcements, discussions, messages, files lists, modules, pages and your profile name and time zone. It reads these from your school's Canvas site with the login you already have in your browser.
- What you add: settings, notes, to-dos, subtasks, pins, syllabus dates and class times, grading scales and other choices.
- Messages you write: if you send or reply to a Canvas message from Neko, it goes straight to your school's Canvas, exactly as if you'd written it in Canvas's inbox. Canvas delivers it to the people you chose.
- Files you import: a syllabus you choose to import is read on your computer to find dates. The file itself isn't kept or sent anywhere.
Where it goes
- All of it is stored in your browser's extension storage on your computer.
- The extension talks to only one website: the Canvas address you choose during setup. Chrome asks your permission for that one site.
- There's no Neko server. Nothing is sent to the developer or to anyone else.
- There are no analytics, ads, trackers or third-party code.
- Your Canvas password is never seen or stored. The extension uses your browser's existing Canvas login.
- To send or manage a message, Canvas requires its security token. The extension reads that one cookie from your school's Canvas site (that's why Chrome lists the "cookies" permission) and uses it only for that request. It reads no other cookies.
Feedback forms
If you choose to fill out a feedback form, that form is run by Google Forms and covered by Google's privacy policy. Only what you type into it is shared. The extension itself never sends anything there, and asking for feedback is a link you can ignore.
What it never does
- Sell, rent or share your information.
- Use your information for advertising, profiling or anything unrelated to showing you your classes.
- Change anything on Canvas on its own. The only changes it makes there are Canvas messages you choose to send, reply to, star, archive or mark read or unread. It can't submit work, post or delete anything.
Student records (FERPA)
FERPA is a US law about how schools handle student education records. Neko isn't a school or school service, and it doesn't receive your records: it lets you view your own information in your own browser, the way you'd see it on Canvas. Because nothing leaves your computer except to your school's own Canvas, the developer never has access to your grades or other education records.
Your choices
- See and back up your data: Settings → Data → Export backup.
- Delete your data: Settings → Data → Clear all data, or uninstall the extension.
- Stop access to Canvas: remove the site permission in Chrome's extension settings, or uninstall.
Children
Neko is meant for students 13 and older. It doesn't knowingly collect anything from anyone, because it doesn't collect information at all.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. A change that collects or shares data would need your clear permission first.
